Anger
“Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret — it only leads to evil.”
Psalm 37:8
“Anger is never without an argument But seldom with a good one.”
Holding on to anger buys you nothing. Staying angry and nursing grudges hurts you far more than it ever hurts the person or thing you’re angry at. I’ve watched smart, successful, creative, wonderful people get slowly strangled by grudges they refused to put down.
Some kinds of anger are socially approved, and that makes them the most dangerous of all. When everyone around you agrees you have a “right” to be angry — because of something that was genuinely unfair, or a wound someone really did cause you — it becomes so much easier to hold onto it forever. People will nod, sympathize, and cut you slack for it, sometimes for a lifetime. But all that permission does is make the anger harder to release.
Wounds from your past and hard circumstances can quietly become crutches and excuses. The people who love you will always give you a pass for them. And there’s real help out there — good counselors and wise people who can help you work through genuine pain, and I’d never want you to avoid that. But be honest with yourself about the difference between healing from something and simply holding onto it. One sets you free; the other keeps you chained to the very thing that hurt you.
Some people even claim their anger helps them — that it drives them, focuses them, makes them work harder. There are far better fuels for a good life — purpose, love, gratitude, and faith among them.
And here’s the real secret to letting it go: you don’t have to carry it alone. Give it to Jesus. Hand Him the anger, the grudge, the hurt — all of it — and let Him take it. He can carry what you can’t. Every time it creeps back (and it will), give it to Him again. That’s not weakness; that’s exactly how healing works. Let the anger go, and let Him have it. You’ll be lighter, freer, and far more yourself without it.
